Have your patio sit above ground level or make the patio itself more than one level and add steps, for example.
- Create Zones – Just as zones are important for interior design, they are useful for patio design. Envision how you will use your patio and create zones for different activities. You may want an area that is reserved for grilling and another for lounging. You can design around these zones with plants and mark them as separate by using outdoor rugs or other features.
- Consider Placement – One of the most important aspects of patio design is where to build the patio. Most people build their patios right up against their home in their backyard, but you can build a patio elsewhere in your yard, too. Maybe you want to place it beneath a large tree for natural shade, for example.
