If you want to spend more time outside, having a designated outdoor living space with cozy furniture and décor can be a great investment. However, you might not know if decks, porches, or patios are the best option for your unique preferences, budget, and goals. To help you decide, our team would like to go over some key points to keep in mind before investing in an upgraded outdoor space.

Patios, Decks, and Porches: Which One Is Right for You?

Patios

Patios are highly functional and convenient, extending your indoor dining and entertaining areas into the outdoors. Covered or uncovered, equipped with a fire pit, or simply furnished with a few lawn chairs, patios are usually made of brick, concrete, or other durable materials. They’re typically positioned at the ground level so that you can walk straight out the door and on to your patio.

Decks

Unlike patios, decks are usually raised off the ground. This extra height can be anywhere from a few feet to an upper story of your home. Unlike porches or covered patios, decks are typically not covered, so while you’ll be able to soak up the sun, you won’t have the shade the other two options provide. More commonly made from wood, decks are better suited to spaces with uneven ground and are popular for lakefronts and poolside locations.

Porches

Porches are usually covered and attached to the house itself. While typically more expensive to install than decks, porches feel more connected to the rest of your home, and when equipped with screens, can give you an oasis from insects and debris while still letting in a gentle breeze.
