Adding a deck to your outdoor living space is a great way to maximize your property and create a dedicated area for barbecuing, entertaining, relaxing, and simply enjoying the great outdoors. If you think you’re ready to jump into your deck building project, there are a few key things you should know before the process begins.

Three Things to Do Before the Deck Building Process Begins

Whenever our team tackles a deck building project, we make sure our clients complete these essential steps first:

  1. Choose the size of your new deck. We can build decks of all shapes and sizes, but before we can draw up plans, we need to know how big you want this new backyard feature to be. While you don’t need to come up with exact measurements, spend a minute figuring out some general dimensions for your new deck.
  2. Pick the level. Do you want a raised deck or a deck that’s level with the ground? Either are great options, but which one you go with will depend on your preferences and your budget. While a raised deck, for example, will give you better views, this type typically costs more to construct than a level deck.
  3. Select the material. When you start a deck building project, you have two main types of materials to choose from: wood or composite. Composite decks can last for a long time, and they require very little ongoing maintenance. Wood decks offer more opportunities for customization, but they require more thorough maintenance over their lifespan. If you’re not sure which is right for you, we’d be happy to show you different options to find the perfect fit for your new deck.
